Each year, EEC International develops a range of English
curriculum
products on behalf of Yoon's English Academy, an affiliate organization based in
Seoul,
Korea. These titles, which are featured in
Yoon's Balanced English as a Foreign Language (BEFL) instructional program, teach
phonics, reading, oral communication, grammar, writing, and subject-area content
in English to children and
adults throughout South Korea.
Our phonics and communication-based products focus on Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS), which establish the framework for English language fluency by stressing everyday communication functions embedded within a situational context. As such, instruction is highly contextualized and often accompanied by gestures or visual cues to boost student learning and understanding.
In contrast, our content-based and literature series focus on Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). Students require these linguistic abilities to understand written and oral information in an academic or context-reduced environment. Without contextual support or visual aids, this type of language can be abstract, and the skills are often more difficult for students to acquire than BICS. However, CALP is absolutely necessary for students wishing to achieve complete English language fluency.
